Adult Education
The study of Torah, Jewish history and tradition is a joyful, never-ending pursuit at Temple Beit HaYam. We have a full calendar of classes, study groups, speakers and workshops to fill the year.

Participatory Torah Study
The Torah Study Group meets at 9:30 a.m. on most Saturday mornings, and at 9:00 a.m. when there is a 10:00 a.m. Shabbat service. The format is open and lively under the leadership of our Rabbi. We read the weekly portion and accompanying commentaries. Our study often leads to freewheeling discussions about traditional Jewish observance, practices in contemporary Reform Judaism, personal spirituality, comparative religions, Zionism, and other ways in which Torah affects the world and our lives. Adult Learning Classes Rabbi Jeff and Cantor Beth teach courses throughout the year, most meeting between four and seven sessions. Courses offered in 2011-2012 included: Adult Beginning Hebrew, The Cantor’s Songbook, Introduction to Judaism, the Literature of the Prayerbook, and Interfaith Study of the Book of Esther. We are planning to offer courses in Jewish Mysticism and Introduction to the Talmud in 2012-2013. |
Guest Speakers
Temple Beit HaYam brings in some of the most interesting and compelling speakers on a wide variety of topics of interest to the Jewish community. Our guest speakers in 2011-20012 included:
• Jonathan Greenberg, the biblical botanist who entertained us with insights about the meanings of different plants mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and on the Passover seder plate.
• June Feiss Hersh, whose remarkable book, Recipes Remembered, combines stories from Holocaust survivors with recipes saved from a lost world of European Judaism.
• Georgy Salton, who book, The 23rd Psalm, shares his own story of surviving ten different concentration camps.
• Thomas Masty, a local activist who is exposing the reality of human trafficking in Florida, including Martin County, and succeeding in passing laws to fight back against modern-day slavery in the United States.
• Linda Epstein of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Palm Beach, who teaches people how to take the first steps to tracing their ancestry.
In addition, we welcome members of the congregation to share their own experience, expertise and knowledge.
